Synthesis and characterization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes decorated with hydroxyapatite

Madalina Elena David et al.

Summary: In this paper, multi-walled carbon nanotubes were prepared at low temperatures and pressure through a simple chemical method, with confirmation of their purity and morphology using various analytical techniques. The functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes with hydroxyapatite was successfully achieved, as demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. This simple approach may be extended to synthesize other composites based on coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes.

Is the Antibacterial Activity of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) Related to Antibiotic Resistance? An Assessment in Clinical Isolates

Pasqualina Lagana et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) exhibit antibacterial activity against bacterial strains isolated from hospital-acquired infections, with functionalized MWCNTs showing a stronger inhibiting effect. The inhibitory effect of MWCNTs may vary in different bacterial strains resistant to antibiotics, with a lower or more lasting effect observed in Gram-positives resistant to cell wall antibiotics and Gram-negatives resistant to nucleic acid and protein synthesis inhibitors.

Hybrid Materials Based on Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes and Nanoparticles with Antimicrobial Properties

Madalina Elena David et al.

Summary: Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were decorated with different types of nanoparticles (NPs) to obtain hybrid materials with improved antimicrobial activity, showing good antimicrobial properties in clinically relevant microbial strains. The presence of NPs on the surface of MWCNTs enhanced the nanocomposites' activity, with zinc oxide and silver nanoparticles improving the antimicrobial properties of the material.
