Understanding the relationships between environmental factors and exacerbations of COPD

Alicia Gayle et al.

Summary: Exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) pose significant health burdens for patients and healthcare systems. Exposure to environmental factors increases the risk of exacerbations. Academic research indicates that future climate change will lead to increased air pollution levels, global temperatures, frequency and severity of extreme weather events, further increasing the risk of COPD exacerbations.

Response of Fogo volcano (Cape Verde) to lunisolar gravitational forces during the 2014-2015 eruption

Stephanie Dumont et al.

Summary: Volcanic eruptions are the result of the complex interaction between internal and external processes, with their temporal evolution influenced by tidal forces. The effusive activity at Fogo volcano in Cape Verde from 2014-2015 showed that magma movement, gas emission, and crustal depths are modulated by lunisolar gravitational forces.

Impact of acidic volcanic emissions on ash leaching and on the bioavailability and mobility of trace metals in soils of Mt. Etna

Edda E. Falcone et al.

Summary: The study presents original geochemical data on rainfall and soil trace metal contents in different areas of Mt. Etna, finding that ash leaching is the main source of elements, while magmatic degassing affects only some volatile elements. The trace element contents in the labile fraction of soil samples are influenced by both soil environment and proximity to volcanic vents.

Influence of Highway Pavement on Metals in Road Dust: a Case Study in Houston, Texas

Matthew Fiala et al.

Summary: The elemental analysis of road dust can determine the contribution of traffic-related metal emissions to the environment. Pavement is the primary source of certain metals in road dust, with concrete contributing significantly to lead levels. Brake and tire wear remain the main concern in non-exhaust vehicle emissions.

Increased respiratory morbidity associated with exposure to a mature volcanic plume from a large Icelandic fissure eruption

Hanne Krage Carlsen et al.

Summary: The 2014-15 Holuhraun eruption in Iceland caused significant air pollution events, with different types of volcanic plumes having varying impacts on health. It is recommended that operational responses to volcanic air pollution should consider both primitive and mature types of plumes.

Toxic metals in size-fractionated road dust from typical industrial district: Seasonal distribution, bioaccessibility and stochastic-fuzzy health risk management

Ying Cai et al.

Summary: The study found that the pollution level and bioaccessibility of toxic metals in road dust increased with decreasing particle size, and heavy metal contamination in winter dust was generally more serious than in summer. Public exposure to dust metals did not pose non-carcinogenic risks, but the risk levels of dust metals at some points in industrial and sensitive areas showed a deteriorating trend.

Spatial characteristics of ecological and health risks of toxic heavy metal pollution from road dust in the Black Sea coast of Turkey

Cafer Mert Yesilkanat et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations of toxic heavy metals in dust samples from the Black Sea coastal road in northern Turkey and evaluated the environmental pollution risk levels. Higher levels of environmental pollution were found in Samsun, Ordu, and Artvin provinces compared to other provinces in the study area, with notable potential ecological risks associated with metals such as Cu, Pb, and Cd. The health risks of toxic heavy metals in road dust for adults and children were found to be within acceptable ranges, with negligible noncarcinogenic health risks and lower cancer risk levels.

How the population in Mount Isa is living with lead exposure from mining activities

Jiajia Zheng et al.

Summary: Lead has been mined at Mount Isa since the 1930s, raising concerns about lead dispersal via dust and high lead concentrations in soil reaching the city. The main exposure routes for residents include ingestion and inhalation, with ingestion being the primary route. Preventative measures, such as wiping surfaces to minimize exposure, are recommended in the ongoing program in Mount Isa.
