Stiffening near-net-shape functional parts of Inconel 718 LPBF considering material anisotropy and subsequent machining issues

Jose David Perez-Ruiz et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing of metallic parts, particularly the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process, has become crucial for manufacturing thin-walled components. However, post-machining operations are still needed to enhance dimensional and surface quality in low stiffness components. This study proposes an iterative design methodology to improve the stiffness of LPBF components by evaluating elastic anisotropy and incorporating LPBF lateral stiffeners. A case study on finishing thin-walled bent ducts shows significant improvement in surface quality using the proposed methodology.
