Obesity during the COVID-19 pandemic: both cause of high risk and potential effect of lockdown? A population-based electronic health record study

M. Katsoulis et al.

Summary: The study highlights that obesity is a modifiable risk factor for COVID-19 related mortality, with both direct and indirect effects on death risk in obese individuals. Changes in obesity during lockdown could increase the risk of COVID-19 infection. Therefore, prevention of obesity and promotion of physical activity are equally important as isolating severely obese individuals during the pandemic.

Weight Change and the Onset of Cardiovascular Diseases: Emulating Trials Using Electronic Health Records

Michail Katsoulis et al.

Summary: The study found that both weight loss and weight gain were associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease in normal weight and overweight individuals. In obese individuals, the weight-loss group had a lower risk of coronary heart disease but not of stroke; weight gain was associated with increased risk of CVD across all BMI groups.
