Study Effect of Antiturbulence Additives on Hydraulic Efficiency in Oil Pipelines by Disk Turborheometer

Experimental results show that the hydraulic efficiency is highest within a specific Reynolds number range and a certain additive concentration; increasing the additive concentration improves hydraulic efficiency, but the effectiveness decreases after exceeding a certain concentration. This is due to turbulent behavior in the flow and an increase in intermolecular interaction caused by polymer entanglement.
To determine the efficiency of additives Necadd-447, M-FLOWTREAT, FLO-XL, and FLO-MXA, a method for conducting experiments and processing the obtained results is proposed in this paper. The hydraulic efficiency for all additives is found to be within the Reynolds number range of 140,000-240,000; the efficiency is maximum for Reynolds numbers of 600,000 to 700,000. Increase in additive concentration to 20-40 ppm increases hydraulic efficiency. Any further increase in concentration decreases effectiveness; this is due to turbulent behavior in the flow induced by a rotating disk and the attenuation of the Toms effect caused by an increase in the intermolecular interaction of polymer tangles. The highest hydraulic efficiency is observed at Reynolds numbers between 500,000 and 700,000. An empirical dependence is proposed to predict the effectiveness of antiturbulence additives in oil and petroleum products in trunk pipelines. (C) 2021 American Society of Civil Engineers.
