Leprosy post-exposure prophylaxis with single-dose rifampicin (LPEP): an international feasibility programme

Jan Hendrik Richardus et al.

Summary: Innovative approaches, such as contact tracing and administration of single-dose rifampicin, have shown promising results in reducing leprosy cases. The study found that integrating these interventions into routine leprosy control activities is feasible and well accepted by patients and healthcare workers. Overall, the post-exposure prophylaxis with SDR is safe and effective in reducing the transmission of Mycobacterium leprae.

The long-term impact of the Leprosy Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (LPEP) program on leprosy incidence: A modelling study

David J. Blok et al.

Summary: The results of the study demonstrate that the Leprosy Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (LPEP) program has a positive impact on reducing the leprosy new case detection rate (NCDR) and preventing many new cases, with benefits increasing over time. The impact of the program varies by region, but screening both household contacts and neighbors yields the highest impact.
