Targeting dyslipidemia by herbal medicines: A systematic review of meta-analyses

Mohammad Sadegh Adel Mehraban et al.

Summary: This systematic review critically assessed meta-analyses of controlled trials evaluating herbal medicines for dyslipidemia. Various herbal remedies such as vegetable oils, phytosterols, tea, soy protein, nuts, and curcumin were found to potentially improve lipid profiles. However, more well-conducted controlled trials are needed to determine the effective doses of these herbal medicines.

Lipid profile and prognosis in patients with coronary heart disease: a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies

Xiangmei Zhao et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis of 21 prospective cohort studies found that an increase in triglyceride levels is associated with a reduced risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, while an increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels is linked to a lower risk of cardiac death. However, lower HDL-C levels may increase the risk of MACE, all-cause mortality, and cardiac death. Additionally, high lipoprotein(a) levels significantly raise the risk of MACE in patients with CHD.

Summary: Dyslipidaemias are alterations to the plasma lipid profile associated with clinical conditions, with high cholesterol being the most common form and a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Treating lipid abnormalities may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes.

A Standardized Extract Prepared from Red Orange and Lemon Wastes Blocks High-Fat Diet-Induced Hyperglycemia and Hyperlipidemia in Mice

Santina Chiechio et al.

Summary: Citrus fruits, particularly red oranges and lemons, are rich in bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins, flavanones, and hydroxycinnamic acids which act as dietary antioxidants. A standardized powder extract, red orange and lemon extract (RLE), showed potential beneficial effects on glucose and lipid metabolism in vivo experiments, suggesting its use for nutraceutical purposes.
