Direct Modulation of the Gut Microbiota as a Therapeutic Approach for Alzheimer's Disease

Yi Wang et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by decline in memory and cognitive functions. Recent research suggests that gut microbiota plays a significant role in the disease and modulation of gut microbiota can be a potential therapeutic target. This review summarizes recent research findings and discusses current limitations and future research directions.

The effect of grape interventions on cognitive and mental performance in healthy participants and those with mild cognitive impairment: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Rachel Jayne Bird et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the evidence on the acute and chronic effects of grape interventions on cognition and mood. Chronic studies found improvements in some cognitive domains, while acute studies showed no consistent effect on memory but improvements in reaction time. However, differences in study design, dosages, and outcome tests hindered between-study comparison. Overall, the results suggest that grapes can enhance certain aspects of cognition after both acute and chronic interventions.

Impact of Microbial Metabolites on Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Davide Banfi et al.

Summary: This article discusses the role of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in the pathogenesis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and the impact of microbial-derived metabolites on the development of IBD-related symptoms. It points out that mood disorders and heightened stress responses may affect the severity of IBD.

Impact of Dietary Flavanols on Microbiota, Immunity and Inflammation in Metabolic Diseases

Maria Angeles Martin et al.

Summary: Flavanols, natural occurring polyphenols abundant in fruits and vegetables, have beneficial effects on health, including modulation of different molecular pathways, regulation of immunological reactions, and modulation of gut microbiome similar to prebiotics. However, the exact mechanisms by which flavanols influence health and disease through microbiota and immune system remain unclear, especially in humans.

The Potential Role of Phytonutrients Flavonoids Influencing Gut Microbiota in the Prophylaxis and Treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Lina Wang et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is comprised of two chronic intestinal inflammatory diseases, characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Trillions of microorganisms in the gut coevolve with the host in a symbiotic relationship, playing a role in the pathophysiology of IBD. Recent research has focused on the interaction between flavonoids, gut microbiota, and IBD, suggesting that flavonoids can potentially change or reshape the gut microbiota for the development of IBD treatments.

Diversity of the gut-microbiome related to cognitive behavioral outcomes in healthy older adults

L. Grant Canipe et al.

Summary: With the aging of the United States population, age-related cognitive disorders are becoming more common, impacting society negatively. This study examined the relationship between gut microbiome diversity and cognitive decline in healthy older adults, finding a connection between gut microbial diversity and cognitive performance. The research is the first to demonstrate an association between ERP outcomes and the gut-microbiome composition.

Summary: Flavonoid-rich foods have potential benefits in cognitive function, particularly in preventing age-related cognitive decline. Research has focused on the mechanisms of anthocyanin, flavanol, and flavanone subgroups within the flavonoid family. Further intervention studies are required to determine the exact impact of flavonoid consumption on cognitive function.

Anthocyanins Promote Learning through Modulation of Synaptic Plasticity Related Proteins in an Animal Model of Ageing

David Vauzour et al.

Summary: The study shows that six weeks of supplementation with pure anthocyanins improved spatial memory and psychomotor performance in aged rats, along with changes in the expression profile of key proteins integral to synaptic function/maintenance. This suggests that purified anthocyanin consumption enhances spatial learning and motor coordination in aged animals through modulation of key synaptic proteins.
