Customer priorities for water and wastewater services: a comparative evaluation of three elicitation methods

Rebecca Sayles et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the intra and inter method consistency of three preference elicitation methods, finding low intramethod variation but significant variation in some intermethod comparisons. The findings suggest a need for a wider range of methods to be studied in order to improve practitioner confidence in the use of these tools.

Recent Advances in Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation with Formic Acid over Heterogeneous Transition Metal Catalysts

Renfeng Nie et al.

Summary: Transition-metal-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation using formic acid as an in situ hydrogen donor has gained significant attention for its efficiency, atom economy, and sustainability compared to traditional high-pressure hydrogen processes. This review summarizes recent progress in heterogeneous hydrogen transfer from formic acid for catalytic transformations of biomass-derived chemicals, nitrogen-containing compounds, and organochlorinated compounds. The article also highlights the synthesis strategies of heterogeneous metal catalysts and optimization of reaction conditions to enhance catalytic activity and regulate product distribution, as well as structure-activity relationships and mechanistic interpretations of formic acid-mediated transfer hydrogenation. Discussion on current challenges and future outlook for the field is also presented.

Biomanagement of hexavalent chromium: Current trends and promising perspectives

Pooja Singh et al.

Summary: Chromium is a widely used heavy metal in industrial sectors, leading to large volumes of toxic industrial wastewaters being discharged into the environment without proper treatment. Biological approaches have shown great potential for chromium removal, including the use of various agro-based waste for adsorption, microbial groups for reduction/precipitation, and emerging agents like biosurfactants for enhanced metal bioremediation. The safe removal and recovery of chromium from wastes is crucial for achieving social, economic, and environmental sustainability as chromium is a non-renewable resource.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.
