Binge Eating and Addictive-Like Behaviours in Males and Females

Johanna Levallius et al.

Summary: The present study explores the relationship between binge eating and other addictive-like behaviors. The results show that binge eating is associated with various behaviors in females, while in males it is associated with purging, compulsive exercise, and overweight/obesity. The study also finds that self-starvation predicts binge eating in males, and food addiction and alcohol dependence predict binge eating in females.

Distress-driven impulsivity interacts with cognitive inflexibility to determine addiction-like eating

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: The study identified a significant interaction effect between distress-driven impulsivity and cognitive flexibility, with higher distress-driven impulsivity being associated with more addiction-like eating behaviors among participants classified as cognitively inflexible only. The findings suggest that interventions targeting distress-driven impulsivity and cognitive inflexibility may be effective in reducing the risk for addiction-like eating behaviors and related disorders.

The nuances of emotion regulation difficulties and mindfulness in food addiction

Lindsey K. Bunio et al.

Summary: This study found that participants with FA had higher levels of difficulty in emotional acceptance, goal-directed behavior, impulse control in response to negative affect, emotion regulation strategies, and emotional clarity. Additionally, FA participants endorsed greater negative affect compared to non-FA participants. Impulsivity, particularly in response to negative affect, was shown to mediate the relationship between mindful acceptance and FA symptoms, while impulsivity did not mediate the relationship for mindful awareness and FA symptoms.
