Fast amplitude modulation up to 1.5 GHz of mid-IR free-space beams at room-temperature

Stefano Pirotta et al.

Summary: Applications utilizing mid-infrared radiation have advanced rapidly in recent years due to breakthroughs like mid-infrared cameras and quantum cascade lasers. However, standalone devices capable of controlling beam amplitude and/or phase at ultra-fast rates are still lacking. A free-space amplitude modulator for mid-infrared radiation has been demonstrated, operating at room temperature up to 1.5 GHz.

Germanium-on-silicon waveguides for long-wave integrated photonics: ring resonance and thermo-optics

Dmitry A. Kozak et al.

Summary: Germanium-on-silicon (GOS) is the leading platform for foundry-based long-wave infrared photonic integrated circuits (LWIR PICs) due to its CMOS compatibility and lack of oxides. Ring resonances and thermo-optic tunability in germanium-on-silicon waveguides have been described, showing potential for photonic integration and waveguide spectroscopy across a wide range of infrared wavelengths.

Suspended germanium waveguides with subwavelength-grating metamaterial cladding for the mid-infrared band

Alejandro Sanchez-Postigo et al.

Summary: A suspended germanium waveguide design with a subwavelength metamaterial cladding has been proposed to overcome the limitations of traditional platforms in terms of intrinsic losses and complex fabrication processes. These waveguides can be fabricated in a simple dry and wet etch step, with a measured propagation loss of 5.3 dB/cm at a wavelength of 7.7 μm, opening the door for the development of integrated devices covering the mid-infrared band up to approximately 15 μm.
