Risk Perception, Risk Communication, and Mitigation Actions of Flash Floods: Results from a Survey in Three Types of Communities

Summary: This study investigates risk perception, warning communication, and mitigation actions related to flash floods in communities. Findings show that there are misconceptions and underestimations of flash flood risks among community members, the perception of warning accuracy is linked to trust in warnings, and social communication with neighbors influences attitudes and behaviors towards flash flood warnings. Most participants are willing to take protective actions when receiving warnings.

Countries like China, Indonesia, and Vietnam have experienced rising climate-related disasters and urgent adaptation strategies are needed to reduce risk and vulnerability. More efforts are required to access and translate literature and evidence from non-English speaking countries to address gaps in understanding and addressing these challenges.
