Spatial Characteristics of Groundwater Chemistry in Unzen, Nagasaki, Japan

Kei Nakagawa et al.

Summary: A study conducted in Shimabara Peninsula, Nagasaki, Japan revealed that nitrate pollution in groundwater is mainly sourced from agricultural fertilizers and livestock waste. The polluted groundwater is predominantly distributed in northeastern, northwestern, and southwestern areas, with a chemistry characterized by (Ca+Mg)-(SO4+NO3) type due to nitrate pollution. Principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis identified the key factors controlling water chemistry and classified groundwater into different groups, highlighting the impact of nitrate pollution.
