Adapting the Olgyay bioclimatic chart to assess local thermal comfort levels in urban regions

Renan Hatakeyama Pontes et al.

Summary: This research proposes adaptations to the Olgyay bioclimatic chart and examines the influence of urban plantation on thermal comfort. By conducting field measurements of microclimatic variables, a new graphic model is proposed and validated with the case study of the Humaita neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. Insights reveal that urban plantation contributes to reducing air temperature and increasing relative humidity, but is insufficient to reach thermal comfort conditions.

Addressing Thermal Comfort in Regional Energy Poverty Assessment with Nussbaumer's MEPI

Tiare Robles-Bonilla et al.

Summary: Research on energy poverty began in response to the 1973 Oil Crisis, with important breakthroughs made by the European community. The multidimensional energy poverty index MEPI has been successfully used in Africa and Latin America, highlighting the importance of thermal comfort. Regional classifications based on weather conditions such as bioclimatic regionalization were found to be more effective in assessing energy services deprivation compared to political divisions.

A Critical Perspective on Positive Energy Districts in Climatically Favoured Regions: An Open-Source Modelling Approach Disclosing Implications and Possibilities

Axel Bruck et al.

Summary: The European Union has introduced the concept of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) to address the issue of urban areas being responsible for the majority of primary energy demand and CO2 emissions. This study proposes a mathematical optimisation approach for PEDs with an hourly primary energy balance constraint, showing that the concept has a higher net present value (NPV) compared to solely buying electricity from the grid in all feasible cases. However, scenarios with reduced grid impact may lead to a decrease in NPV due to expensive battery installations.

Towards a Just Energy Transition, Barriers and Opportunities for Positive Energy District Creation in Spain

Adam X. Hearn et al.

Summary: The European Commission has committed to forming 100 Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) as part of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan by 2025, which could potentially be significant instruments in decarbonization efforts. Research suggests that new forms of energy ownership and production found in PEDs could help reduce energy poverty, leading to improved energy expenditure and behavior for households. Policy engagement and support are crucial in successfully implementing PEDs, with barriers such as lack of knowledge and awareness, and lack of consumer trust needing to be addressed.

IEA EBC Annex83 Positive Energy Districts

Asa Hedman et al.

Summary: The increasing global demand for energy efficiency and renewable energy sources, along with the rapid urbanization rate, has accelerated research on Positive Energy Districts (PED). However, there is still a lack of clarity on the shared definition, technological approaches, and methodological issues related to PED, calling for a global scientific discussion.
