Opportunities and limitations for the introduction of circular economy principles in EU aquaculture based on the regulatory framework

Leticia Regueiro et al.

Summary: EU aquaculture only meets a small fraction of internal demand for aquatic foods, but boosting this industry must adhere to high standards of environmental protection and social benefits. However, evaluating the environmental sustainability of aquaculture and other food production systems is complex due to various tools and approaches available.

Operationalization of Interorganizational Fairness in Food Systems: From a Social Construct to Quantitative Indicators

Ingunn Y. Gudbrandsdottir et al.

Summary: This study aims to facilitate research on fairness in food systems by defining the social construct of fairness in model operational terms. Seven groups of factors related to fairness perceptions were identified during the conceptualization phase, leading to the identification of five indicators of fairness that are operational in a quantitative model.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.

Less is more: Negative relationship between biomass density and sea lice infestation in marine salmon farming

Nathalie van Walraven et al.

Summary: The relationship between biomass density and sea lice infestation was studied in marine salmonid aquaculture, comparing organic and conventional salmon production. Organic salmon had significantly higher sea lice levels than conventionally produced salmon, but there were no significant differences in mortality rate and growth rate between the two production strategies.

Environmental impacts of animal-based food supply chains with market characteristics

Wenhao Chen et al.

Summary: Animal-based food supply chains have significant environmental impacts influenced by production systems, distribution networks, and consumption patterns. Life cycle assessment was used to model the environmental impacts of different animal-based food chains and found that reduction in food waste and use of sustainable aviation fuel can lead to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
