Intricacies of Moral Geographies of Land Restitution in Estonia

Anu Printsmann et al.

Summary: This article uses moral geographies to analyse the land restitution process and outcome. The land restitution in Estonia started in 1991 with the aim of reversing Soviet wrongdoings over the past 50 years. However, this task proved to be complex, involving practical issues as well as social and spatial justice. To date, land reform has been completed on 99% of Estonia's territory.

Coastal erosion driven Land-Sea Interactions in Maritime Spatial Planning - a case of Bulgaria

Margarita Stancheva et al.

Summary: Human activities and natural processes interact in complex ways at the land-sea interface. Coastal erosion, particularly in the northern part of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, is a critical issue that can have negative impacts on marine and coastal environments as well as on human activities. This study focuses on coastal erosion driven Land-Sea Interactions in Shabla Municipality, aiming to increase understanding and utilize the results in coastal management and Maritime Spatial Planning to mitigate coastal erosion impacts.

Knowing the Littoral: Perception and Representation of Terraqueous Spaces in a Global Perspective

Wilko Graf von Hardenberg

Summary: This article discusses littorals as important interfaces where land and water meet, serving as core areas for human interaction with the sea. While littorals are often studied for their unique and significant local features, the global ocean is actually a medium connecting littoral regions through physical, biological, and cultural means, making each shore a part of the global coastline.

Data integration and participatory process in developing integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) in the northern Baltic Sea

Reija Hietala et al.

Summary: The EU ratified the MSP Directive and Blue Economy Strategy, incorporating ICZM elements to manage maritime activities and resources effectively. By developing various approaches for land-sea interactions based on local challenges and spatial data, the study aimed to enhance ICZM throughout Europe. The application of ICZM plans to national MSP processes supported the sustainable development of coastal areas in Estonia and Finland.

Governing the Land-Sea Interface to Achieve Sustainable Coastal Development

Gerald G. Singh et al.

Summary: Coastal regions are crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals due to their significance for human habitation, resource provisioning, employment, and cultural practice. A governance framework is proposed for the land-sea interface to address the interconnected nature of the SDGs and integrate complex interdependencies between various sectors. Misalignment in governance systems at different scales can hinder progress, and strategies are highlighted to align actors and actions for effective implementation.

Borderscapes in landscape: Identity meets ideology

Raili Nugin et al.

Summary: This article examines the interrelatedness of ideology and everyday practices in shaping bordering practices in landscape. Through a case study of Estonian land usage borders post-Soviet Union dissolution, it demonstrates how conflicts arising from bordering practices are reconciled on individual and collective levels. The study suggests that the processes of shaping landscape borders are dynamic, depending on complex interrelations of identity and ideology.
