Alkali activation of bottom ash from municipal solid waste incineration: Optimization of NaOH- and Na 2SiO3-based activators

R. Carvalho et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential to valorize municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ashes in the Construction industry, reducing environmental pressure from the cement industry. Bottom ash specimens exhibited fast carbonation and significant strength increase, although performance declined under certain conditions; further mix design optimization offers significant potential for the manufacture of industry-fit construction materials.

Positive Influence of Liquid Sodium Silicate on the Setting Time, Polymerization, and Strength Development Mechanism of MSWI Bottom Ash Alkali-Activated Mortars

Lei Jin et al.

Summary: This study found that a strongly alkaline environment is crucial for the solidification properties of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash alkali-activated samples, and the self-condensation reaction of liquid sodium silicate in a supersaturated state is the main reason for rapid coagulation. The combination of NaOH and liquid sodium silicate achieves optimal effects by playing a compatible coupling role.

Alkali-Activated Binders Using Bottom Ash from Waste-to-Energy Plants and Aluminium Recycling Waste

Alex Maldonado-Alameda et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential of weathered bottom ash and a secondary aluminium recycling process by-product as precursors for alkali-activated binders. The results showed that increasing NaOH concentration and PV content led to higher porosity and lower compressive strength in the obtained AABs.

Summary: This study assessed the environmental risks of alkali-activated binders prepared with waste materials, showing varying metal(loid) concentrations in materials prepared with different fractions and multiple metal(loid)-release mechanisms in service life scenarios. Additionally, the correlation between some metal(loid) concentrations and toxicity was demonstrated in acute toxicity tests with model organisms.
