Studies on fruit morphology, nutritional and floral diversity in less-known melons (Cucumis melo L.) of India

Anjula Pandey et al.

Summary: Less-known melons belonging to the genus Cucumis melo L. were studied for their morphological characteristics, nutritional components, and floral diversity in the Indian region. The study identified distinct morphotypes and nutritional traits among different accessions, highlighting the potential for using these melons in pre-breeding programs for desirable traits. Floral diversity analysis may also provide marker characters for crop improvement programs.

Landrace added value and accessibility in Europe: what a collection of case studies tells us

L. Raggi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the in situ maintenance of landraces in different agro-environmental conditions in Europe, as well as identified the main factors influencing landrace added values and accessibility. The results showed that farmers are the main actors maintaining landraces in situ, mainly carrying out their activity under organic or low-input conditions, in marginal areas. This evidence can contribute to the establishment of future European policies and strategies to protect and increase landrace use.

Nutritional Composition and Health Benefits of Various Botanical Types of Melon (Cucumis melo L.)

Shivapriya Manchali et al.

Summary: Characterizing the nutritional qualities and health-beneficial effects of 30 melon genotypes revealed potential health benefits in certain landraces, including high polyphenols contents and antioxidant activities, as well as nitric oxide induction and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition activities. These findings suggest the potential use of specific genotypes for breeding improved melon cultivars to promote these fruits and a healthy diet.
