Preliminary Assessment of Carbon and Nitrogen Sequestration Potential of Wildfire-Derived Sediments Stored by Erosion Control Structures in Forest Ecosystems, Southwest USA

James B. Callegary et al.

Summary: The preliminary study investigated the potential carbon and nitrogen sequestration in postwildfire sediments deposited in stream channels. It found that higher burn severity led to greater accumulation of organic carbon and nitrogen in downstream sediment capture structures. The results also suggest that older erosion control structures store sediments enriched in microbially processed biomass compared to newer structures.
