A Systematic Review of Passing as Non-autistic in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Erin J. Libsack et al.

Summary: The phenomenon of behaving in ways inconsistent with the presence of autism (PAN) has attracted increasing attention in scientific literature, with a relatively balanced mix of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method studies. Studies included a higher proportion of autistic participants, with good documentation of participant gender and age but limited information on race or ethnicity. Additionally, measurements related to internalizing symptoms, often associated with PAN, were reported in a small percentage of studies.

Evaluating atypical language in autism using automated language measures

Alexandra C. Salem et al.

Summary: The study developed Automated Language Measures (ALMs) to measure language differences in individuals with ASD, which were found to be correlated with clinical and language evaluations. ALMs significantly predicted ASD status with 67.9-75.5% accuracy, and improved to 82.4% accuracy when combined.

Friendship understanding in males and females on the autism spectrum and their typically developing peers

Mateusz Platos et al.

Summary: The study found that autistic individuals typically pay less attention to intimacy and unconditional responsiveness in friendship understanding compared to their typically developing peers, and provide less complex definitions of a 'friend'. Additionally, autistic males endorsed unconditional responsiveness and complexity less often than females. Participants who included cognitive-developmental aspects in their definition of a 'friend' more frequently reported having casual friends and a best friend.

You Must Become a Chameleon to Survive: Adolescent Experiences of Camouflaging

Courtney J. Bernardin et al.

Summary: Research shows that both autistic and neurotypical individuals engage in camouflaging, with potential sex differences in reasons for camouflaging in autistic adults. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with autistic and neurotypical adolescents revealed trends in camouflaging motivations and consequences by diagnosis and sex, particularly among autistic females. These findings contribute to a better understanding of camouflaging and its potential negative impacts on different groups.

Natural language markers of social phenotype in girls with autism

Amber Song et al.

Summary: Girls with autism spectrum condition (ASC) are often underdiagnosed compared to boys, possibly due to misunderstood sex differences in social interest and motivation. Using natural language processing, this study found that autistic girls showed more discussion about social groups during conversation than ASC boys, indicating potential awareness of social exclusion. Highlighting subtle linguistic differences in verbally fluent autistic girls can help improve identification and support for this understudied group within the autism spectrum.
