Perspectives of US General Surgery Program Directors on Cultural and Fiscal Barriers to Maternity Leave and Postpartum Support During Surgical Training

Manuel Castillo-Angeles et al.

Summary: The study found that US surgical program directors recognize challenges in maternity leave and postpartum support for residents, including residents being reluctant to extend training, the impact of childbearing on work quality, and lack of lactation policies. Complex interpersonal issues, such as stigma and resistance to change, also affect residents. A multidimensional approach is needed to support pregnant and mother residents effectively.
