The pathophysiology of functional movement disorders

Benedetta Demartini et al.

Summary: Functional neurological disorder is characterized by neurological symptoms that cannot be explained by typical neurological diseases or other medical conditions. This review critically discusses the pathophysiology of functional movement disorders (FMD), revealing a complex scenario with abnormal brain activities and connectivity in FMD patients. Hyperactivation of the amygdala is proposed as a possible biological marker for FMD, while alterations in functional connectivity between the amygdala and other brain areas contribute to the pathophysiological complexity of FMD.
