Physicochemical defect guided dewetting of ultrathin films to fabricate nanoscale patterns

Abhijna Das et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the physicochemical heterogeneity created by the AuNPs on the PDMS surface could guide the hole-formation and affect the spacing and periodicity of the droplets formed, with the size and spacing of the holes and droplets being tunable by varying the nanoparticle loading. Compared to dewetting on homogeneous PDMS surfaces, the AuNP guided patterns showed ten-fold miniaturization, resulting in high-density random patterns on the PDMS substrate.

Bioactive Functional Nanolayers of Chitosan-Lysine Surfactant with Single- and Mixed-Protein-Repellent and Antibiofilm Properties for Medical Implants

Urban Ajdnik et al.

Summary: Medical implant-associated infections caused by biofilm formation are a major concern, but bioactive nanocoatings can prevent bacterial attachment and biofilm formation. A novel polyelectrolyte-surfactant complex was developed and successfully deposited on PDMS surfaces, showing strong repulsion towards blood proteins and effective antimicrobial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria under dynamic conditions. This multifunctional coating has great potential in improving the design of medical devices by combining protein-repellent and antimicrobial properties.

Synthesis of Siliconized Photosensitizers for Use in 1O2-Generating Silicone Elastomers: An Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Study

Cody B. Gale et al.

Summary: Traditional strategies for combating device-acquired infections are becoming insufficient due to the rise of antibiotic-resistant organisms, leading researchers to explore photoactive coatings as a potential alternative. However, synthesizing and characterizing silicone devices capable of producing reactive oxygen species is challenging due to incompatibility issues and incomplete understanding of incorporation methods. Covalently cross-linking photosensitizers with silicone elastomers has been shown to be more efficient in generating singlet oxygen compared to physically dispersed counterparts, highlighting the importance of minimizing aggregates in the production process.

Spectroscopic Signatures of MQ-Resins in Silicone Elastomers

April M. Sawvel et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of a series of model silicone networks modified with a specific class of silicone-resin known as MQ-resin, using Raman and advanced NMR spectroscopy methods. Raman spectroscopy successfully quantifies the contribution of MQ-resin to the network, determines the type of MQ-resin present, and investigates the completeness of the network cross-linking reaction. NMR spectroscopies are employed to detect MQ-resins and quantify changes in segmental dynamics of the network as MQ-resin concentration varies. The results suggest that MQ-resin particles and PDMS chains maintain independent segmental dynamics at high MQ-resin concentrations, where the physical properties of the resin dominate those of the overall network.
