In situ Observation of Li Deposition-Induced Cracking in Garnet Solid Electrolytes

Jun Zhao et al.

Summary: The penetration of lithium into solid electrolytes causes short circuits in Li solid-state batteries, hindering the development of high energy density SSBs. Observations of Li deposition-induced cracking in SEs at nanometer resolution revealed that Li propagated mainly along transgranular cracks in a garnet Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12. The initiation and propagation of cracks appear to be driven by the pressure generated by Li deposition.
