New sensitivity curves for gravitational-wave signals from cosmological phase transitions

Kai Schmitz

Summary: This paper presents novel peak-integrated sensitivity curves (PISCs) for predicting the sensitivity to gravitational wave signals from strong first-order phase transitions in the early Universe. These PISCs offer advantages over conventional methods and directly encode information on the expected signal-to-noise ratio.

Exploring the early Universe with Gaia and Theia

Juan Garcia-Bellido et al.

Summary: It has been suggested that Gaia has the potential to detect a stochastic gravitational wave background in a frequency range ideal for studying phase transitions in early universe cosmology. Additionally, Gaia could be used to differentiate between primordial black holes produced during early universe transitions and those expected from the QCD epoch. Furthermore, Gaia may play a role in exploring topological defects and shedding light on recent NANOGrav results.

Model-independent energy budget for LISA

Felix Giese et al.

Summary: The study presents a simple method to obtain the kinetic energy fraction in gravitational waves generated during a cosmological first-order phase transition based on wall velocity and quantities from the particle physics model at the nucleation temperature. The study compares results for deflagrations and hybrids, provides a Python code snippet for calculating the kinetic energy fraction, and evaluates realistic deviations in speed of sound close to the phase transition temperature in a specific model.

Bubble wall velocity: heavy physics effects

Aleksandr Azatov et al.

Summary: This study examines the dynamics of relativistic bubble expansion during a first order phase transition, focusing on ultra relativistic velocities gamma >> 1. It demonstrates that fields heavier than the phase transition scale can have a significant impact on friction and alter the motion of the bubble wall, leading to interesting phenomenological outcomes. Additionally, the effects of NLO on friction caused by soft vector field emission are also reviewed.

Dark matter scattering cross section and dynamics in dark Yang-Mills theory

Nodoka Yamanaka et al.

Summary: This study calculates for the first time the scattering cross section between the lightest glueballs in SU(2) pure Yang-Mills theory, identifying them as potential candidates for dark matter. By evaluating the interglueball potential and scattering cross section, the research provides observational constraints on dark matter self-scattering and derives a lower bound on the scale parameter of the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory.

Effective picture of bubble expansion

Rong-Gen Cai et al.

Summary: Recent calculations on thermal friction on an expanding bubble from the cosmic first-order phase transition have revealed higher-order friction effects, leading to a proposed effective equation of motion for bubble wall expansion. The gamma(2)-scaling friction in bubble collisions results in a slightly larger signal of gravitational waves background.

Universal gravitational-wave signatures from heavy new physics in the electroweak sector

Astrid Eichhorn et al.

Summary: The study identifies a universal relation between the mean bubble separation and the strength parameter of the phase transition, which helps constrain the gravitational-wave spectra resulting from heavy (TeV-scale) new physics. The implications of this result include contributing to distinguish heavy from light new physics directly from the gravitational-wave signature and suggesting a concerted effort of gravitational-wave observations together with collider experiments to distinguish between different models of heavy new physics.

Dark holograms and gravitational waves

Francesco Bigazzi et al.

Summary: The spectra of stochastic gravitational waves generated in cosmological first-order phase transitions are computed within strongly correlated theories with a dual holographic description. The study considers bubble collisions and sound waves arising from two types of first-order phase transitions and finds that the gravitational wave spectra may be within the sensitivity range of ground-based and space-based interferometers, as well as Pulsar Timing Arrays, depending on the model parameters. The research also explores characteristic spectra with double frequency peaks when two phase transitions occur at different critical temperatures.

String fragmentation in supercooled confinement and implications for dark matter

Iason Baldes et al.

Summary: This study suggests that in the early universe, fundamental quanta of a strongly-coupled sector can lead to enhanced composite state production through string fragmentation when swept into expanding bubbles of the confined phase. The resulting composite states are highly boosted in the plasma frame, leading to additional particle production through subsequent deep inelastic scattering. This has significant implications for the abundance and energetics of particles in the universe, as well as for the Lorentz factors of bubble walls.

Dark confinement-deconfinement phase transition: a roadmap from Polyakov loop models to gravitational waves

Zhaofeng Kang et al.

Summary: In this study, the first order confinement-deconfinement phase transition of SU(N) pure Yang-Mills theory is explored using Polyakov loop models (PLMs) and gravitational wave (GW) spectra. The models with Haar measure term are found to be incompatible with large N scaling reported from lattice simulations, leading to the proposal of 4-6 PLM and 4-8 PLM models which exhibit consistent thermodynamic properties and can be probed in future interferometers.
