Adversarially Learned Anomaly Detection on CMS open data: re-discovering the top quark

O. Knapp et al.

Summary: The study applies the ALAD algorithm to detect new physics processes in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, achieving performances comparable to Variational Autoencoders and substantial improvement in some cases. Training the ALAD algorithm on 4.4 fb-1 of 8 TeV CMS Open Data, the study demonstrates a data-driven anomaly detection and characterization in real life, rediscovering the top quark at the LHC.

Casting a graph net to catch dark showers

Elias Bernreuther et al.

Summary: This article explores the potential use of supervised deep neural networks to identify semi-visible jets, finding that dynamic graph convolutional neural networks outperform traditional convolutional neural networks. The research suggests that adjusting the training samples can reduce model dependence, and using dynamic graph networks as dark shower taggers can significantly enhance LHC sensitivity to dark sectors.

Spheres to jets tuning event shapes with 5d simplified models

Cari Cesarotti et al.

Summary: Hidden sectors can result in a variety of events at the LHC, ranging from events with a small number of jets to quasi-spherical soft unclustered energy patterns. The intermediate regime, where the coupling is unclear, may lead to signals that evade existing search strategies. By using simplified models in extra dimensions, events with intermediate characteristics between spherical and jetty can be generated, with the shape of the event depending on the number of decays produced near kinematic threshold. The analytic understanding and use of event isotropy as an observable provide insight into the shape of events produced in this model.

Twin Higgs portal dark matter

David Curtin et al.

Summary: Many minimal models of dark matter and canonical solutions to the hierarchy problem have been excluded or constrained by LHC and direct detection null results. The study introduces THPDM to generalize HPDM in Twin Higgs models and predicts a direct detection signal orders of magnitude below that of HPDM. Twin radiation contributions are suppressed in many Twin Higgs models, leading to possible signals at next generation experiments.

Better latent spaces for better autoencoders

Barry M. Dillon et al.

Summary: Autoencoders used in anomaly searches at the LHC face the structural problem of working in only one direction, therefore a solution was proposed to derive classifiers from the latent space of (variational) autoencoders, specifically in Gaussian mixture and Dirichlet latent spaces. The Dirichlet setup was found to solve the problem and improve both the performance and interpretability of the networks.
