Quasioptical System for Corneal Sensing at 220-330 GHz: Design, Evaluation, and Ex Vivo Cornea Parameter Extraction

Aleksi Tamminen et al.

Summary: This study presents the design, simulation, and characterization of a quasioptical system for submillimeter-wave quantification of corneal thickness and water content. By optimizing aspheric lens coefficients, the design achieved wavefront coupling to spherical surfaces superior to equivalent hyperbolic lenses. The research demonstrates the potential of using quasioptical systems for dynamic observation of tear film, thickness, and water content changes.

Extraction of Thickness and Water-Content Gradients in Hydrogel-Based Water-Backed Corneal Phantoms Via Submillimeter-Wave Reflectometry

Aleksi Tamminen et al.

Summary: A new submillimeter-wave measurement technique has been developed to extract both thickness and water-content gradients from a soft-tissue phantom, without the need for ancillary measurements. The results show that the free-water volume fraction in the phantoms varies minimally, and the thickness accuracy is high in physiologically relevant geometry.

In vivo sensing of rabbit cornea by terahertz technology

Lin Ke et al.

Summary: A novel scalable approach using Terahertz waves and electromagnetic field simulation was applied to study rabbits' corneas in vivo, revealing the potential of THz spectroscopy technique in obtaining information from different corneal sublayers. Good correlation was observed between central corneal thickness measurements and THz wave reflection signal intensities, indicating the effectiveness of this technique in monitoring corneal conditions.

Submillimeter-Wave Permittivity Measurements of Bound Water in Collagen Hydrogels via Frequency Domain Spectroscopy

Aleksi Tamminen et al.

Summary: This study presents measurements of the permittivity of gelatin hydrogels using submillimeter-wave reflectometry. The results indicate a higher loss related to bound water than anticipated, which will help reduce uncertainty in measurements of gelatin hydrogel-based tissue phantoms. This is the first known measurement of complex permittivity of the bound-water component in solid, proteinaceous matter using submillimeter-wave frequency domain techniques.
