Fitness maps to a large-effect locus in introduced stickleback populations

Dolph Schluter et al.

Summary: Most mutations for adaptation to new environments are small-effect, but large-effect beneficial variants can contribute significantly under certain conditions. A study on stickleback populations showed that an ancient freshwater allele near the Eda gene had a large fitness effect, leading to a significant increase in offspring survival and allele frequency in freshwater environments. The findings suggest strong selection on this gene (and/or linked genes) in freshwater habitats, which may increase the prevalence of large-effect fitness variants in adaptive evolution.

Experimental evolution of adaptive divergence under varying degrees of gene flow

Sergio Tusso et al.

Summary: This study using evolve-and-resequence experiments with fission yeast populations subjected to disruptive ecological selection under different levels of migration investigates how gene flow, ancestral variation, and genetic correlations affect the evolution of adaptive divergence. The results show that adaptive divergence is most pronounced in allopatry and sympatry, but significantly reduced in parapatry and local mating. It highlights the complex interactions between gene flow, ancestral variation, and genetic correlations in shaping adaptive trajectories.

Global adaptation complicates the interpretation of genome scans for local adaptation

Tom R. Booker et al.

Summary: Spatially varying selection increases genetic differentiation between demes, leading to outliers in genome-wide distribution of summary statistics like F-ST, often misinterpreted as evidence of local adaptation. Global adaptation contributes significantly to molecular evolution, generating genetic differentiation patterns that may mistakenly be attributed to local adaptation in F-ST.
