History and Current Status of Sugarcane Breeding, Germplasm Development and Molecular Genetics in Brazil

D. E. Cursi et al.

Summary: Brazil is one of the world's largest producers of sugarcane and has been continuously improving yields through sugarcane breeding. The country's breeding programs have made significant advancements, including the use of biotechnological approaches, to maintain its global leadership in the sugarcane industry.

Estimation of the Optimal Number of Replicates in Crop Variety Trials

Weikai Yan

Summary: Replicated multi-location yield trials are essential for crop variety trials, but each replicate comes with a cost, so it is important to optimize the number of replicates based on single-trial and multi-location trial functions. Research shows that the function derived from multi-location trials is more accurate in determining the optimal number of replicates. In some cases, using two replicates can save costs while maintaining selection efficacy.

Accuracy of genomic prediction of complex traits in sugarcane

Ben J. Hayes et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the potential of genomic selection to increase the rate of genetic gain for key traits in sugarcane breeding programs. Genomic single-step prediction method combining pedigree and SNP information achieved the most accurate predictions, indicating the potential for a doubling of the rate of genetic gain with the right breeding strategy. Genomic selection also showed promise in improving flowering traits in sugarcane breeding programs.

Strategies and considerations for implementing genomic selection to improve traits with additive and non-additive genetic architectures in sugarcane breeding

Kai P. Voss-Fels et al.

Summary: The simulations demonstrate that genomic selection has the potential to increase genetic gain in sugarcane, with success depending on the trait genetic architecture and implementation strategy. Both simulated GS schemes outperformed standard phenotypic selection, especially for an additive genetic model, but still showed greater genetic gains even for a complex non-additive trait model. Cost-benefit ratios indicated that genotyping 1500 clones per 10-year breeding cycle could lead to substantial benefits.

Utility of Climatic Information via Combining Ability Models to Improve Genomic Prediction for Yield Within the Genomes to Fields Maize Project

Diego Jarquin et al.

Summary: Genomic prediction is an efficient method for developing improved cultivars, with new methods continuously being developed to integrate various data types. The use of modern automated weather systems can enhance predictive ability by capturing continuous data on environmental parameters, but further research is needed to link observed weather conditions with important physiological aspects in plant development for improved predictive ability.

Recent Large-Scale Genotyping and Phenotyping of Plant Genetic Resources of Vegetatively Propagated Crops

Hilde Nybom et al.

Summary: Recent national and international projects have focused on large-scale genotyping of vegetatively propagated crops, aiming to identify true-to-type plant material, detect synonyms, investigate genetic diversity, and create sustainable databases for research and breeding. Different DNA markers and next-generation sequencing methods have their advantages and disadvantages, with large-scale phenotyping methods lagging behind but crucial for understanding commercially important traits. Collaborative projects with broad-scale data collection are likely to produce more reliable results in the analysis of gene action and development of robust DNA markers.

Improved genomic prediction of clonal performance in sugarcane by exploiting non-additive genetic effects

Seema Yadav et al.

Summary: Non-additive genetic effects are important in the expression of complex traits in sugarcane, and including non-additive effects in genomic prediction models significantly improves the prediction accuracy of clonal performance. The study showed that prediction accuracies for TCH were improved using extended-GBLUP model, but no improvement was observed for CCS and Fibre.

Genomic selection and genetic gain for nut yield in an Australian macadamia breeding population

Katie M. O'Connor et al.

Summary: The study suggests that incorporating genomic selection for yield in the Australian macadamia breeding program may accelerate genetic gain due to reduction in generation length, though the cost of genotyping appears to be a constraint at present.

Advanced genebank management of genetic resources of European wild apple, Malus sylvestris, using genome-wide SNP array data

Joukje Buiteveld et al.

Summary: The field genebank collection of European wild apple in the Netherlands was found to be mainly composed of pure M. sylvestris accessions, with about 29% of the accessions showing close genetic relationships. The study suggests that the collection should be managed as a single unit to prevent bias in allele frequencies in the seeds.

Summary: The study identified multiple SNPs associated with FER resistance in maize, with moderate prediction accuracies observed. Genomic background and minor QTL were found to play a significant role in controlling FER resistance. Incorporating SNP associations from GWAS into genomic selection shows promise for improving FER resistance in maize.
