Economic impact of yield and composition variation in bioenergy crops:Populus trichocarpa

Renee M. Happs et al.

Summary: In order to achieve a bio-based economy, it is important to consider variability within a feedstock population and select economically advantageous genotypes for domestication. Research showed that when considering tree size, both size and carbohydrate content have nearly identical influences on minimal fuel selling price, highlighting the importance of focusing on both aspects for economically optimal feedstock selection.

Accurate determination of genotypic variance of cell wall characteristics of a Populus trichocarpa pedigree using high-throughput pyrolysis-molecular beam mass spectrometry

Anne E. Harman-Ware et al.

Summary: The py-MBMS analysis of a Populus trichocarpa pedigree revealed significant phenotypic plasticity in lignin composition, while broad-sense heritability for biomass composition remained high after correcting for spatial environmental variation. Maternal effects primarily drove lignin and phenolic ion abundances, with paternal effects playing a role in carbohydrate-derived ions. This study highlights the importance of accounting for instrumental and microspatial environmental variability in biomass composition data for genetic breeding applications in poplar.
