Citrus sinensis CBF1 Functions in Cold Tolerance by Modulating Putrescine Biosynthesis through Regulation of Arginine Decarboxylase

Jie Song et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that CBF1 in sweet orange directly regulates the expression of ADC gene and modulates Put synthesis, leading to enhanced cold tolerance. This research sheds light on the transcriptional regulation of Put accumulation and provides insights into the CBF-mediated cold stress response.

Dopamine Alleviates Chilling Stress in Watermelon Seedlings via Modulation of Proline Content, Antioxidant Enzyme Activity, and Polyamine Metabolism

Congjian Jiao et al.

Summary: The study showed that exogenous application of dopamine can significantly alleviate chilling stress in watermelon seedlings by improving seedling health index and increasing chlorophyll content. Dopamine supplementation also helps modulate osmolytes, antioxidant enzymes, and polyamine metabolism to counteract the harmful effects of chilling stress.

Jasmonic acid-regulated putrescine biosynthesis attenuates cold-induced oxidative stress in tomato plants

Fei Ding et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that JA regulates Put biosynthesis by acting on ADC in tomato plants under cold stress, and the process partly relies on MYC2 as a regulator. JA-induced accumulation of Put mitigates cold-induced oxidative stress in plants.

Methyl jasmonate mediates melatonin-induced cold tolerance of grafted watermelon plants

Hao Li et al.

Summary: Enhanced cold tolerance in watermelon shoots due to pumpkin or figleaf gourd rootstock is associated with increased accumulation of melatonin, methyl jasmonate (MeJA), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Melatonin is involved in grafting-induced cold tolerance by inducing the accumulation of MeJA and H2O2, forming a self-amplifying feedback loop that leads to increased H2O2 accumulation and cold tolerance.

Abscisic acid and putrescine synergistically regulate the cold tolerance of melon seedlings

Meng Li et al.

Summary: The study found that under cold stress, the levels of ABA and putrescine in melon seedlings increase, enhancing cold tolerance. ABA and putrescine may regulate each other's synthesis, triggering the antioxidant system and reducing membrane lipid peroxidation damage.

A chromosome-level genome of a Kordofan melon illuminates the origin of domesticated watermelons

Susanne S. Renner et al.

Summary: Wild relatives or progenitors of crops are important resources for breeding and understanding domestication, but identifying them is challenging due to extinction, hybridization, and the difficulty of distinguishing them from feral forms. This study used collection-based systematics, iconography, and resequenced accessions to find the potential progenitor of the domesticated watermelon, identifying a Sudanese form known as the Kordofan melon as the closest relative. Genomic analysis showed that genetic changes related to bitterness loss and fruit flesh color occurred from the progenitor to the domesticated watermelon, with fruit sweetness gradually increasing over the course of watermelon domestication.
