Enhanced OsNLP4-OsNiR cascade confers nitrogen use efficiency by promoting tiller number in rice

Jun Yu et al.

Summary: The excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers has harmful effects on the environment, but by studying the genetic regulation of nitrogen use efficiency-related genes, wheat yield and NUE can be improved. By discovering the interaction between OsNLP4 and OsNiR, and constructing NREs to enhance nitrogen assimilation, the number of tillers and yield can be significantly increased.

Genomic basis of geographical adaptation to soil nitrogen in rice

Yongqiang Liu et al.

Summary: This study uncovers the genetic basis of nitrogen-use efficiency in rice, specifically related to tillering response to nitrogen, and identifies OsTCP19 as a key regulator modulating this response. The differential transcriptional response and variation in tillering response to nitrogen among rice varieties are governed by a 29-bp insertion and/or deletion in the OsTCP19 promoter, with implications for geographical adaptation in rice and potential for breeding high-yielding, nitrogen-efficient modern rice cultivars.

Linkage analysis, GWAS, transcriptome analysis to identify candidate genes for rice seedlings in response to high temperature stress

Zhaoran Wei et al.

Summary: The study observed changes in three main biomass traits in rice seedlings after high-temperature treatment, and identified relevant loci and important candidate genes associated with the rice response to abnormal high temperatures. These findings provide valuable insights for further exploration of beneficial heat-resistant genes for rice breeding.

The Ghd7 transcription factor represses ARE1 expression to enhance nitrogen utilization and grain yield in rice

Qing Wang et al.

Summary: The Ghd7 gene in rice acts as a transcriptional repressor, binding directly to specific binding sites in the promoter and intron of the ARE1 gene to suppress its expression, positively regulating nitrogen utilization. These two genes display inverse oscillation expression patterns between day and night, and have undergone diversifying selection during breeding.

Comparative transcriptome analysis of different nitrogen responses in low-nitrogen sensitive and tolerant maize genotypes

Du Qing-guo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated 304 maize accessions for low-N tolerance under field conditions and identified Ye478 and Qi319 for further investigations. The DEGs in root of Qi319 under special N deficiency were mainly enriched in energy-related metabolic pathways, while the special N deficiency-responsive DEGs related to thylakoid and chloroplast pathways were repressed by low-N stress in Ye478. Additionally, 216 TFs and 15 miRNAs were identified as special N deficiency responsive genes between Qi319 and Ye478, contributing to the understanding of genetic variations and molecular basis of low-N tolerance in maize.

Natural allelic variation in a modulator of auxin homeostasis improves grain yield and nitrogen use efficiency in rice

Siyu Zhang et al.

Summary: The external application of nitrogen fertilizers is important for increasing crop production, however, excessive use can lead to increased costs and environmental issues. Modulating the DNR1-mediated auxin response represents a promising strategy for achieving environmentally sustainable improvements in rice yield.
