Response of soil protozoa to acid mine drainage in a contaminated terrace

Rui Xu et al.

Summary: The study characterized the structures of protozoan communities inhabiting a terrace heavily contaminated by AMD, revealing that previously unrecognized protozoa dominate extremely acidic soils. pH was found to be the most important factor regulating the abundance of protozoan taxa, with metagenomic analysis showing enrichment of functional genes related to alleviating acid stress and various metabolic pathways among these protozoa. Additionally, numerous co-occurrences between protozoa and bacterial or fungal taxa were observed, suggesting shared environmental preferences or potential bio-interactions among them.

Summary: This study explored the adaptability and response of soil microbiome to As and Sb co-contamination in two contrasting sites within the Shimen realgar mine, indicating that geochemical parameters play a key role in shaping community composition and metabolic potentials. Certain bacteria were predicted to be tolerant to high concentrations of As and Sb, and co-occurrence network analysis revealed that genes related to C fixation, nitrate/nitrite reduction, N fixation, and sulfate reduction were positively correlated with As and Sb fractions.
