Genetic variation in the symbiont partners in the endangered macrolichen Seirophora villosa (Teloschistaceae: Ascomycota)

Isaac Garrido-Benavent et al.

Summary: The decline of highly sensitive lichen populations has led to their inclusion on regional Red Lists, but the genetic variation of their fungal and algal symbiotic partners has rarely been examined. This study surveyed the red-listed lichen Seirophora villosa in 14 Mediterranean coastal populations to explore the genetic diversity of both partners. The distribution of haplotypes in both the fungus and photobiont followed the same trend, with some being widespread and others restricted to single localities. The fungus showed moderate selectivity in its choice of photobiont, associating with two undescribed Trebouxia microalgae with biased distributions. The results suggest that protection should not only be given to the red-listed S. villosa, but also to the entire investigated epiphytic lichen community.

Thallus Growth Stage and Geographic Origin Shape Microalgal Diversity in Ramalina farinacea Lichen Holobionts

Arantzazu Molins et al.

Summary: Lichen symbioses are microecosystems that host a variety of organisms beyond the main lichen symbionts. Recent studies have shown that microalgal diversity in lichens is influenced by the growth stage, geographic area, and habitat type. The balance of different photobionts in lichens may not be as previously assumed.

Sharing and double-dating in the lichen world

Matthew P. Nelsen

Summary: Recent studies on lichen diversity have focused on the symbiotic relationship between fungi, algae, and cyanobacteria, with a particular emphasis on the overlooked diversity of cyanobacterial symbionts. Sequencing over 650 specimens has revealed evidence of symbiont sharing among distantly related fungi and temporal discordance among interacting fungal and cyanobacterial lineages.

Unravelling the Symbiotic Microalgal Diversity in Buellia zoharyi (Lichenized Ascomycota) from the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands Using DNA Metabarcoding

Patricia Moya et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of geography and habitat on phycobiont diversity in populations of Buellia zoharyi from the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands. The results showed that this lichen can associate with distinct phycobiont strains in different habitats and geographic regions. Additionally, the selection of thallus parts for DNA extraction in metabarcoding analyses is crucial to avoid bias in total phycobiont diversity detected.

Global Biodiversity Patterns of the Photobionts Associated with the Genus Cladonia (Lecanorales, Ascomycota)

Raquel Pino-Bodas et al.

Summary: The study on the diversity of lichen photobionts associated with Cladonia revealed a high genetic diversity of Asterochloris. The main drivers for the genetic variation of Asterochloris were found to be mycobiont identity and climate, with different Asterochloris lineages showing dominance in specific climatic regions. Additionally, both specialist and generalist species of Cladonia were identified based on their association with specific Asterochloris OTUs.
