Plant functional group drives the community structure of saprophytic fungi in a grassland biodiversity experiment

Davide Francioli et al.

Summary: The richness and community structure of root-associated saprophytic fungi can largely be predicted by plant functional groups and their associated root traits. This means that the effects of plant diversity on ecosystem functions such as litter decomposition may also be predictable using information on plant functional groups in grasslands.

Rhizobacterial communities, enzyme activity, and soil properties affect rice seedling's nitrogen use

Hangyu Dong et al.

Summary: This study found that rice varieties with high nitrogen use efficiency (HNUEs) and low nitrogen use efficiency (LNUEs) recruit distinct root microbiota at the seedling stage. HNUEs enriched more diverse bacterial taxa with N metabolism functions than LNUEs. Additionally, the content of available N and microbial biomass in HNUEs' rhizospheric soil were higher than those in LNUEs. Through redundancy analysis, certain bacterial taxa were identified to have the potential function of beneficial microorganisms for seedling N use and growth. Membership of rice seedling and soil microbiota, combined with other factors, could contribute to improving N use efficiency and promoting resistance and survival rate after transplanting.

Flooding variations affect soil bacterial communities at the spatial and inter-annual scales

Ruichang Shen et al.

Summary: Hydrological variations have significant impacts on the diversity and composition of soil bacterial communities in wetlands. The study found that soil bacterial diversity varied between two hydrological contrasting years, with lower diversity in the flooding year. Soil bacterial compositions were distinctly separated by elevation and year, indicating different habitat preferences and responses.

How Does the Waterlogging Regime Affect Crop Yield? A Global Meta-Analysis

Li-xin Tian et al.

Summary: The study found that waterlogging significantly decreases crop yield by reducing factors such as grain weight, biomass, plant height, photosynthetic rate, and leaf area index. The impact of waterlogging on crop yield varies depending on crop type, and the longer the duration of waterlogging, the greater the reduction in yield.

DNA Metabarcoding for the Characterization of Terrestrial Microbiota-Pitfalls and Solutions

Davide Francioli et al.

Summary: Soil-borne microbes play a crucial role in terrestrial ecosystems by cycling organic matter, transporting nutrients between trophic levels, and impacting plant growth. The advancement of high-throughput sequencing platforms has allowed for in-depth study of complex microbiota in soils and plants, with DNA metabarcoding emerging as a powerful and cost-effective method for characterizing microbiota in environmental samples. However, the processing steps involved in DNA metabarcoding may introduce biases that compromise the reliability of the results, making it important to consider crucial steps to ensure an accurate and standardized characterization of microbiota in environmental studies.

Crop host signatures reflected by co-association patterns of keystone Bacteria in the rhizosphere microbiota

Simon Lewin et al.

Summary: The study identified metabolically active bacterial microbiota in the rhizosphere of wheat, barley, rye, and oilseed rape at different growth stages. The bacterial microbiota was shaped by two different rhizosphere compartments, with different key bacteria identified for each crop species. The findings suggest host plant-specific interactions within the rhizosphere microbiota that are essential for modifying native crop microbiomes and developing bio-fertilizers.

The microbiomes on the roots of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and rice (Oryza sativa L.) exhibit significant differences in structure between root types and along root axes

Akitomo Kawasaki et al.

Summary: Understanding the spatial variation of microbial communities on roots is crucial for root function and disease prevention. Significant differences were found in bacterial and fungal communities between different root types, plant species, and positions along the root axes. This variation is closely linked with root-microbe interactions.
