The starlet sea anemone, Nematostella vectensis, possesses body region-specific bacterial associations with spirochetes dominating the capitulum

Anthony M. Bonacolta et al.

Summary: Sampling of different body regions can reveal highly specialized bacterial associations within the holobiont and facilitate identification of core microbial symbionts that would otherwise be overlooked by bulk sampling methods. Through compartment-specific sampling of the model cnidarian Nematostella vectensis, a dominance of spirochetes in the capitulum was uncovered, with a phylogenetic analysis showing a close relation to spirochetes previously recovered from wild N. vectensis, suggesting a prevalent and yet uncharacterized association between N. vectensis and spirochetes from the order Spirochaetales.

Avenues of reef-building coral acclimatization in response to rapid environmental change

Hollie M. Putnam

Summary: The discussion focuses on the challenges climate change poses to the adaptation of marine organisms, particularly those that are sessile benthic species. It emphasizes the importance of interactions between rapid and evolutionary responses, as well as the role of the microbiome, epigenetics, and parental effects in facilitating rapid adaptation. The researcher proposes investigating the significance of epigenetic inheritance and highlights reef-building corals as important models for understanding adaptive feedback loops.

Symbiont Transmission onto the Cell Surface of Early Oocytes in the Deep-sea Clam Phreagena okutanii

Kanae Igawa-Ueda et al.

Summary: Symbiotic associations with beneficial microorganisms provide host animals with adaptability to the environment, and the stable transmission of symbionts is crucial for maintaining these associations. Research on the deep-sea clam Phreagena okutanii revealed that symbionts are mainly located on the outer surface of the cell membrane of primary oocytes. These findings contribute to our understanding of the transmission processes of symbionts in clams.
