Importance of Supermicron Ice Nucleating Particles in Nascent Sea Spray

Brock A. Mitts et al.

Summary: With oceans covering 71% of the Earth's surface, sea spray aerosol (SSA) particles are crucial in the global radiative budget, acting as cloud condensation nuclei and ice nucleating particles (INPs). Supermicron SSA particles, produced using a natural breaking wave analogue, are shown to be the major source of INPs throughout the lifecycle of a phytoplankton bloom and are more efficient INPs than submicron SSA particles due to carrying a greater number of ice active components. Incorporating supermicron SSA in INP parameterizations is necessary for future climate models.

Acidity across the interface from the ocean surface to sea spray aerosol

Kyle J. Angle et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates that freshly emitted sea spray aerosols have significantly lower pH values than seawater, with smaller aerosol particles having even lower pH values. Aerosol acidity is found to be correlated with dissolved carbon dioxide but not with marine biology within seawater. The study discusses the mechanisms and implications of this acidity on atmospheric chemistry.

New particle formation in the remote marine boundary layer

Guangjie Zheng et al.

Summary: Marine low clouds play a crucial role in the climate system, with their properties being sensitive to cloud condensation nuclei concentrations. New particle formation is a major source of cloud condensation nuclei globally, and evidence shows that it regularly occurs in the upper part of the remote marine boundary layer following cold front passages, impacting marine low clouds.

Role of Sea Surface Microlayer Properties in Cloud Formation

Brianna N. Hendrickson et al.

Summary: The study suggests that sea salt in marine aerosols is the key factor driving cloud formation potential, while organic material from ocean surface waters has minimal impact on the cloud condensation nuclei properties of aerosols. The cloud formation potential of mixed organic and sea salt marine aerosols will be slightly weakened or remain unchanged compared to sea spray aerosols.

Chemical Fingerprinting of HULIS in Particulate Matters Emitted from Residential Coal and Biomass Combustion

Yaoqiang Huo et al.

Summary: Identification of humic-like substances structures and components in PM2.5 is still challenging due to their complexity. A combination of two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used to address this complexity, revealing a significantly higher number of compound species in HULIS compared to previous studies, with aromatics being the most abundant compounds.

Aerosol Marine Primary Carbohydrates and Atmospheric Transformation in the Western Antarctic Peninsula

Sebastian Zeppenfeld et al.

Summary: The study found higher concentrations of combined carbohydrates in both particulate and dissolved phases in seawater compared to dissolved free carbohydrates, with moderate enrichment factors in SML samples. In atmospheric particles, combined carbohydrates were mainly found in particles of two size modes and were strongly correlated with Na-aerosol and wind speed. The aerosol monosaccharide compositions in the atmosphere were significantly different from those in seawater, suggesting selective consumption and release of polysaccharides by bacteria in the atmosphere.

Northern High-Latitude Organic Soils As a Vital Source of River-Borne Dissolved Iron to the Ocean

Regina Krachler et al.

Summary: SAHLs loaded with iron from river runoff reach the oceans annually. They are strong iron-binding ligands in the ocean, resisting dissociation in high dilution. SAHLs are efficient in releasing bioavailable Fe(II) under UV light in surface waters, while remaining stable and transporting iron in ocean currents at greater depths.

Atmospheric Humic-Like Substances (HULIS) Act as Ice Active Entities

J. Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ice nucleation activities of HULIS derived from atmospheric and biomass burning aerosols, finding that they can effectively trigger heterogeneous ice nucleation under mixed-phase cloud conditions. The results of this study suggest that HULIS could be an important contributor to ice nucleating particle concentrations in the atmosphere.

Factors controlling marine aerosol size distributions and their climate effects over the northwest Atlantic Ocean region

Betty Croft et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand marine aerosol size distributions and composition in the northwest Atlantic Ocean region, using observations collected during the North Atlantic Aerosols and Marine Ecosystems Study (NAAMES) and modeled with the GEOS-Chem and TOMAS algorithms. Observations showed increased aerosol number with diameters larger than 3 micrometers in the lower troposphere during phytoplankton bloom, while simulations suggested key factors such as particle formation and growth by marine secondary organic aerosol contributing to cloud-condensation-nuclei-sized particles with significant regional radiative effects in the northwest Atlantic.
