Emergence of Hybrid Resistance and Virulence Plasmids Harboring New Delhi Metallo-β-Lactamase in Klebsiella pneumoniae in Russia

Polina Starkova et al.

Summary: The study found that carbapenem-resistant hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-hvKp) is a new threat to healthcare. Analysis of nine CR-hvKp isolates from patients with nosocomial infections in Saint Petersburg revealed that eight of them carried large mosaic plasmids with resistance to carbapenems and hypervirulence, and identified four types of hybrid plasmids. The discovery of similar plasmids in distant regions suggests a wider distribution of hybrid plasmids carrying virulence and resistance genes.
