Dengue Virus Serotype 2 Intrahost Diversity in Patients with Different Clinical Outcomes

Maria Celeste Torres et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences in viral population structure among different clinical classifications of Dengue virus serotype 2 circulating in Brazil, driven mainly by different infection times and selection pressures rather than clinical outcomes. However, diversity in the NS2B gene was found to be constrained, regardless of clinical outcome and infection time. High frequency of non-synonymous intrahost single-nucleotide variants were identified among cases with warning signs and severe cases, but no single variant appeared to characterize cases of greater severity independently.

Defective viral genomes as therapeutic interfering particles against flavivirus infection in mammalian and mosquito hosts

Veronica V. Rezelj et al.

Summary: Arthropod-borne viruses, such as Zika virus, pose a significant threat to global public health. Innovative strategies utilizing defective viral genomes (DVGs) have shown promise in interfering with virus replication and reducing transmission in mammalian hosts and mosquito vectors. This study presents a method combining experimental evolution and computational analysis to identify fit DVGs that can serve as potential human therapeutics and vector control strategies to mitigate arbovirus transmission and disease.

Defective Interfering Genomes and the Full-Length Viral Genome Trigger RIG-I After Infection With Vesicular Stomatitis Virus in a Replication Dependent Manner

Andreas Linder et al.

Summary: The study found that replication of VSV is essential for a robust interferon response, with copy-back defective-interfering (DI) genomes and full-length viral genomes identified as main triggers of RIG-I. VSV stocks depleted of DI genomes lost most of their interferon-stimulating activity, while the remaining full-length genomes still triggered RIG-I.

MEGA11 Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis Version 11

Koichiro Tamura et al.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
