Molecular characterization of Prototheca in 11 symptomatic dogs

Christian Falcaro et al.

Summary: Protothecosis is a rare disease caused by algae of the genus Prototheca, with diagnosis established through cytologic or histologic preparations and species identification requiring molecular investigations. Prototheca identifications were found to be consistent with the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene, and low carriage rates in healthy dogs may be more related to host predisposing factors.

Efficient assembly of nanopore reads via highly accurate and intact error correction

Ying Chen et al.

Summary: The error correction and de novo assembly tool NECAT developed by the authors efficiently produces high-quality assemblies of nanopore reads. The tool utilizes adaptive read selection and a two-step progressive method to overcome the high error rates in nanopore reads.

Characterization of Prototheca CYP51/ERG11 as a possible target for therapeutic drugs

Takahisa Watanabe et al.

Summary: Prototheca spp., achlorophyllous algae found in nature, are causing an increasing number of human and animal infections known as protothecosis. The efficacy of antifungal azoles in treating protothecosis, which target the enzyme CYP51/ERG11, is controversial. This study characterized the CYP51/ERG11 gene and structure of Prototheca, suggesting potential use of antifungal azoles as therapeutic drugs.

Genome-wide DNA mutations in Arabidopsis plants after multigenerational exposure to high temperatures

Zhaogeng Lu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that long-term elevated temperatures significantly increase mutation rates in plants with distinctive mutational spectra, occurring mainly in intergenic regions, coding regions, and transposable elements. Additionally, mutations are more likely to accumulate in genes associated with defense responses, DNA repair, and signaling under elevated temperatures.
