Morphological and Transcriptional Changes in Human Bone Marrow During Natural Plasmodium vivax Malaria Infections

Marcelo A. M. Brito et al.

Summary: This study reveals the presence of Plasmodium vivax parasites in the bone marrow of malaria patients and the associated dyserythropoiesis and ineffective erythropoiesis. Furthermore, it shows that during infections, genes related to erythroid maturation are down-regulated while immune response genes are up-regulated.

Endothelial glycocalyx degradation and disease severity in Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium knowlesi malaria

Bridget E. Barber et al.

Summary: Degradation of the endothelial glycocalyx is increased in knowlesi and vivax malaria, and is associated with disease severity and acute kidney injury in knowlesi malaria. In knowlesi malaria, the difference in median syndecan-1 between severe and non-severe disease was more marked in females than males. Agents that inhibit glycocalyx breakdown may represent adjunctive therapeutics for severe non-falciparum malaria.

Evaluation of splenic accumulation and colocalization of immature reticulocytes and Plasmodium vivax in asymptomatic malaria: A prospective human splenectomy study

Steven Kho et al.

Summary: A study in malaria-endemic Papua and non-endemic France found high concentrations of immature reticulocytes in the spleens of individuals infected with Plasmodium vivax, suggesting a niche for parasite survival. Additionally, P. vivax-infected erythrocytes of all stages accumulated in the spleen, indicating a potential cryptic endosplenic lifecycle. These findings provide insights into P. vivax-specific adaptations for survival and replication.
