Prevalence of drug interactions in hospitalised elderly patients: a systematic review

Luciana Mello de Oliveira et al.

Summary: A review of 34 studies involving 9577 hospitalized elderly patients found a wide range of prevalence in drug-drug interactions (DDIs), from 8.34% to 100%; DDIs were more common in geriatric units, ranging from 80.5% to 90.5%, potentially due to differences in patient conditions, level of care complexity, and methodological variations; Commonly involved drugs in DDIs include furosemide, captopril, warfarin, and dipyrone.

An International Consensus List of Potentially Clinically Significant Drug-Drug Interactions in Older People

Pauline Anrys et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish an explicit list of potentially clinically significant drug-drug interactions (DDIs) in individuals aged over 65 years. Through a multidisciplinary expert panel and a Delphi survey, consensus was achieved on 66 potentially clinically significant DDIs, most of which involved cardiovascular, antithrombotic, and central nervous system drugs. The final list includes information on the mechanism of interaction, harm, and management, with treatment modification recommended for three-quarters of DDIs.

Optimizing Therapy to Prevent Avoidable Hospital Admissions in Multimorbid Older Adults (OPERAM): cluster randomised controlled trial

Manuel R. Blum et al.

Summary: This study found that inappropriate prescribing was common in older adults with multimorbidity and polypharmacy admitted to hospital, and could be reduced through pharmacotherapy optimization intervention. However, this intervention did not have a significant effect on drug related hospital admissions, suggesting the need for additional efforts to improve patient outcomes.
