Experimental Determination of Pedestrian Thermal Comfort on Water-Retaining Pavement for UHI Adaptation Strategy

Yasuhiro Shimazaki et al.

Summary: A quantitative and subjective evaluation was conducted on a novel water-retaining pavement (WR) and a conventional dense-asphalt pavement (AS), revealing that WR significantly lowers surface temperature and human thermal load, resulting in improved thermal comfort.

Ecologisation of Polish cities in the light of selected parameters of sustainable development

Aleksandra Lewandowska et al.

Summary: The objective of the article was to analyze and evaluate the changes of cities in Poland in terms of sustainable development characteristics, including waste management, water and sewage management, air quality and protection, green infrastructure, and nature protection. The study of 65 cities in Poland found that the value of the summative ecologisation index increased by an average of 6% between 2004 and 2016. Improvement in ecologisation level was observed in 94% of the studied cities, which was attributed to the implementation of environmentally friendly solutions in urban areas of Poland.

Influence of Blue-Green and Grey Infrastructure Combinations on Natural and Human-Derived Capital in Urban Drainage Planning

Sikhululekile Ncube et al.

Summary: The concepts of natural capital and ecosystem services describe the multiple benefits people get from nature, while urbanization is identified as a key factor influencing the decline of natural capital globally. This study shows that the application of blue-green infrastructure in urban drainage can enhance natural capital and ecosystem services, contributing to amenity value and social capital.

Thermal conditions during heat waves of a mid-European metropolis under consideration of climate change, urban development scenarios and resilience measures for the mid-21st century

Heidelinde Trimmel et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of urban development scenarios on air temperature, surface temperatures, and human thermal comfort in Vienna. The results show that global and regional climate change causes significant increases in air temperature, with urban growth primarily affecting local temperatures and thermal comfort. Measures such as near zero-energy standards and increasing building albedo can help reduce urban canyon temperatures, but additional measures like tree shade may be necessary to mitigate the heat burden on residents.

Effects of Densification on Urban Microclimate-A Case Study for the City of Vienna

Wolfgang Loibl et al.

Summary: Climate adaptation, mitigation, and protection strategies are crucial in the face of intensifying climate change, particularly in densely populated urban areas. The study assessed the impacts of densification on urban climate and potential adaptation strategies in a Viennese district. Densification has both negative effects, such as reducing wind speeds and accelerating heat island effects, and positive effects, such as daytime cooling due to larger shaded areas. Implementing measures like street greening and green facades can help reduce the negative impacts of densification and improve urban microclimates.

Sponge city strategy and application of pavement materials in sponge city

Xin Guan et al.

Summary: China has proposed a novel urban strategy called Sponge City to address frequent urban flood issues, focusing on water resource management and the use of permeable pavement materials. These materials are designed to be porous to meet infiltration, retention, purification, evaporation, and drainage requirements, offering environmental advantages such as water purification, traffic noise reduction, Urban Heat Island mitigation, and waste materials recycling. While the economic benefits of permeable pavements compared to traditional pavements are still controversial, the future development of pavement materials in Sponge City is expected to improve hydrological performance and expand application range.

Experimental Comparative Study between Conventional and Green Parking Lots: Analysis of Subsurface Thermal Behavior under Warm and Dry Summer Conditions

Ryad Bouzouidja et al.

Summary: Green infrastructure plays an important role in climate change adaptation strategies in cities, with pervious pavements showing thermal benefits under warm and dry summer conditions. The study also highlights the importance of low mineral content in surface coatings to reduce surface warming, including asphalt systems and other types.
