Favorable Monsoon Environment over Eastern Africa for Subsequent Tropical Cyclogenesis of African Easterly Waves

Kelly M. Nunez Ocasio et al.

Summary: Eastern Africa is a common region for the onset of African easterly waves (AEW) and their early life. This study found that developing AEWs in this region experience a more favorable large-scale environment compared to nondeveloping AEWs, which may impact the prediction of subsequent tropical cyclone formation. The differences in large-scale conditions between developers and nondevelopers, such as an active West African monsoon and more intense zonal Somali jet, could influence the likelihood of tropical cyclogenesis in this region.
