Changes in temperature extremes and their relationship withENSOin Malaysia from 1985 to 2018

Mou Leong Tan et al.

Summary: The study reveals a warming trend in surface temperature across Malaysia, particularly in Peninsular Malaysia, with significant increases in warm extreme indices and decreases in cool extreme indices. Urbanization has intensified the urban heat island effect, leading to faster warming in major cities compared to rural and highland areas. ENSO has a stronger impact on warm extreme indices than cool extreme indices in Malaysia.

Changing pattern of drought in Nepal and associated atmospheric circulation

Kalpana Hamal et al.

Summary: This study examines the spatial and temporal variation of drought characteristics in Nepal using the SPEI, revealing increased drought frequency, duration, and severity after 2004, particularly in the Central and Eastern regions. Large-scale atmospheric circulations and weakened moisture transport from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal were identified as contributing factors to enhanced drought events in the study region.

Evidence of asymmetric change in diurnal temperature range in recent decades over different agro-climatic zones of India

Rajesh Kumar Mall et al.

Summary: The study reveals an increasing trend in diurnal temperature range, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, and solar radiation in India from 1951 to 2016, but a decreasing trend in diurnal temperature range since 1991, primarily due to the higher increase in minimum temperature compared to maximum temperature.

Human-driven greenhouse gas and aerosol emissions cause distinct regional impacts on extreme fire weather

Danielle Touma et al.

Summary: Research shows that the increase in wildfire risk due to greenhouse gas emissions was balanced by aerosol-driven cooling in the 20th century, but as aerosol emissions decrease in the future, there will be a significant increase in extreme fire weather risk in the 21st century, especially in regions where temperature and humidity changes play a major role in extreme fire weather conditions.

Evaluation of Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Susceptibility Using Multi-Criteria Assessment Framework in Mahalangur Himalaya

Nitesh Khadka et al.

Summary: The ongoing recession of glaciers in the Himalaya due to global climate change has significant impacts on the formation and expansion of glacial lakes, leading to potential glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) which pose threats to downstream communities. A recent study in the Mahalangur Himalaya region identified seven glacial lakes with very high GLOF susceptibility based on analysis of historical events. Scientists emphasize the need for regular monitoring and detailed fieldwork on these highly susceptible glacial lakes to improve early warning systems and reduce disaster risks for communities downstream.

Drought characteristics over Nepal Himalaya and their relationship with climatic indices

Shankar Sharma et al.

Summary: Understanding drought characteristics is crucial for sustainable societal and ecosystem functioning, particularly in the face of climate change. This study examined drought patterns in the Nepal Himalaya from 1980 to 2016, revealing increased frequency, severity, and duration of drought events after 2000. Summer and annual droughts are primarily influenced by NINO3.4, while autumn drought is controlled by DMI. Winter and spring droughts are linked to the Arctic Oscillation.

Impact of diurnal temperature range on cardiovascular disease hospital admissions among Chinese farmers in Dingxi (the Northwest China)

Guangyu Zhai et al.

Summary: The study found that there is an association between diurnal temperature range (DTR) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in rural China, with a more pronounced effect in women and elderly individuals. Future preventive measures should consider DTR to prevent CVD among susceptible populations.

Future changes in the frequency of temperature extremes may be underestimated in tropical and subtropical regions

N. Freychet et al.

Summary: In a warming world, temperature extremes are expected to exhibit noticeable changes, with uncertainties in predictions linked to differences in land-atmosphere feedback across models. This study proposes using the variability of daily surface maximum temperature as a constraint for future projections, indicating that hot extreme changes by the end of the century may be worse than previously estimated, especially for tropical and subtropical regions as well as South and East Asia. Tests with a large multi-model ensemble of climate models suggest that present-day variability of daily maximum temperature can serve as an emergent constraint on the frequency of heat extremes in a warmer climate.
