Influence of photobioreactor set-up on the survival of microalgae inoculum

Alessia Bani et al.

Summary: Cultivating specific microalgae in an industrial setting is challenging due to contamination and economic cost considerations. Understanding the ecology of microalgae cultivation is necessary for stable production. Results show that a closed photobioreactor configuration is essential for maintaining a specific microalgae inoculum, while other systems develop a different eukaryotic community due to contamination and higher fitness of contaminants.

Effect of operational parameters, environmental conditions, and biotic interactions on bacterial communities present in urban wastewater treatment photobioreactors

Javiera Collao et al.

Summary: The study showed that biomass productivity in photobioreactors increased as water depth decreased, but a decrease in bacterial community evenness may lead to a reduction in nutrient removal. Heterotrophs and phototrophs, mainly from the family Rhodobacteraceae, dominated bacterial diversity, and community changes were driven by various environmental factors and biological interactions.

Role of Microalgae in the Recovery of Nutrients from Pig Manure

Ana Sanchez-Zurano et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of microalgae in removing nutrients from pig farm wastewater, reducing environmental impact and health risks. Microalgae assimilated part of the N-NH4+ present in the media to produce biomass without converting it into N-NO3- as in traditional processes.

Using surfactants for controlling rotifer contamination in mass cultivation of Chlorella pyrenoidosa

Aoqi Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate is effective in controlling rotifer contamination in Chlorella cultures without negative effects on algal growth. It is a fast-acting, highly effective, and low-cost treatment method for biological contamination control in microalgae mass culture.

Consumer knowledge and attitudes towards microalgae as food: The case of Spain

Tomas Lafarga et al.

Summary: The study found that Spanish consumers lack basic knowledge about microalgae, but generally consider them sustainable, nutritious, and safe. The main reasons for not consuming microalgae are lack of information and habit. Increasing consumer knowledge on microalgae could lead to greater choice and market shares for microalgae-enriched products.
