Integration of electrochemical and calcium hypochlorite oxidation for simultaneous sludge deep dewatering, stabilization and phosphorus fixation

Shaogang Hu et al.

Summary: A hybrid electrochemical process with Ca(ClO)(2) addition was proposed to improve sludge dewaterability, stabilization, and phosphorus fixation simultaneously. The process achieved efficient sludge stabilization, high phosphorus removal rate, and enhanced electrocoagulation for improved dewatering. The multifunctional effects were achieved through the cooperation of extracellular electrooxidation and active chlorine.

Glucose electro-fermentation with mixed cultures: A key role of the Clostridiaceae family

Javiera Toledo-Alarcon et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of bacterial community composition on glucose electro-fermentation, finding that the initial microbial community significantly impacted the final microbial community and metabolic patterns. The results showed differences in H-2 yield between anaerobic and activated sludge inocula, with the relative abundance of Clostridiaceae family members playing a determining role in overall performance during electro-fermentation.

How Does Chitosan Affect Methane Production in Anaerobic Digestion?

Xuran Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that chitosan in sewage sludge anaerobic digestion could inhibit methane production by restricting the transfer of organic substrates and reducing microbial activities. Chitosan also suppressed the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances and increased mass transfer resistance, leading to a lower metabolic rate of anaerobes.

Mechanisms of emerging pollutant Dechlorane Plus on the production of short-chain fatty acids from sludge anaerobic fermentation

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: The emerging pollutant Dechlorane Plus (DPs) was found to significantly inhibit waste-activated sludge anaerobic fermentation, reducing the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). DPs promoted sludge disintegration but inhibited hydrolysis and acidification processes, while also suppressing the release of soluble bound extracellular polymers (SB-EPS). The microbial community analysis showed a decrease in acid-producing bacteria such as Firmicutes and Actinobacteriathe, as well as specific genera like Proteiniclasticum and Mycobacteriumwas in the presence of DPs.

Mechanistic insights into the effect of poly ferric sulfate on anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Xuran Liu et al.

Summary: Poly ferric sulfate (PFS) has a significant impact on methane production in activated sludge, leading to decreased methane potential and production rate, as well as extended lag time. PFS causes physical enmeshment, disrupts enzyme activity, and inhibits the bioprocess of hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and methanogenesis.

Freezing pretreatment assists potassium ferrate to promote hydrogen production from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge

Jiawei Hu et al.

Summary: A novel high-efficiency technology combining freezing with potassium ferrate (PF) was reported for promoting hydrogen production in sludge anaerobic fermentation. The combined treatment showed positive synergetic effect on hydrogen production, enhancing the potential and rate of hydrogen production while accelerating sludge disintegration. Gene sequencing analysis revealed enrichment of hydrolytic and hydrogen generating bacteria in the combined pretreatment fermenter, with notable enhancement in dewatering performances of fermented sludge.
