Natural Organic Matter Removal from Raw Surface Water: Benchmarking Performance of Chemical Coagulants through Excitation-Emission Fluorescence Matrix Spectroscopy Analysis

Raymond John C. Go et al.

Summary: Chemical disinfection of surface waters is effective in reducing the risk of water-borne pathogen contamination, but can generate hazardous disinfection-by-products from natural organic matter (NOM). Therefore, the removal of NOM is crucial. FeCl3 and PACl are effective pre-treatment technologies for NOM abatement, with PACl showing higher efficiency in NOM removal than FeCl3.

Identifying the best coagulant for simultaneous water treatment objectives: Interactions of mononuclear and polynuclear aluminum species with different natural organic matter fractions

Mathieu Lapointe et al.

Summary: The study found that prehydrolyzed coagulants containing polymeric and/or cationic aluminum species are more effective in removing organic matter from water sources compared to conventional metal salt coagulants. In acidic conditions, ferric sulfate outperformed aluminum-based coagulants, while aluminum chlorohydrate was repeatedly noted as the best option in more alkaline conditions. Alum offered a good compromise between DOC and turbidity removals in neutral pH range.

Removal of natural organic matter from source water: Review on coagulants, dual coagulation, alternative coagulants, and mechanisms

H. N. P. Dayarathne et al.

Summary: Natural organic matter (NOM) can significantly impact drinking water quality, causing taste, odour, and colour problems. Removing NOM is challenging as it can lead to the formation of disinfection by-products which are harmful to human health. Various technologies have been used to remove NOM, with coagulants being the most common method.
