Multiple stressors determine river ecological status at the European scale: Towards an integrated understanding of river status deterioration

Jan U. Lemm et al.

Summary: The biota of European rivers are influenced by a variety of stressors, with alterations in hydro-morphology, nutrient enrichment, and toxic substances being the most significant factors. The interaction between these stressors plays a crucial role in influencing the ecological status of the rivers. This highlights the importance of implementing comprehensive management strategies at the catchment scale to achieve good ecological status in European surface waters.

Making waves. Bridging theory and practice towards multiple stressor management in freshwater ecosystems

Bryan M. Spears et al.

Summary: Despite common use of single-stressor abatement approaches in freshwater management, unexpected ecological responses can occur when multiple stressors interact, highlighting the need to address limitations in developing multiple-stressor management strategies and bridge theory and practice. Practical recommendations include using empirical models and experiments to predict freshwater degradation effects in response to changes in multiple stressors.

Probability maps of anthropogenic impacts affecting ecological status in European rivers

Olga Vigiak et al.

Summary: Understanding how human activities impact river ecological status is crucial for developing effective management strategies. Data on river habitats in Europe has increased since the Water Framework Directive, but differences in monitoring still make it challenging to identify continent-wide patterns. Various indicators of anthropogenic pressures in freshwater across Europe have been developed, but more effective indicators are needed for addressing hydromorphological alterations and chemical pollution at a continental scale.

Agricultural Effects on Streams and Rivers: A Western USA Focus

Robert M. Hughes et al.

Summary: Croplands and rangelands have altered lands and waters for millennia globally, with 30% of USA streams and rivers showing poor macroinvertebrate condition and 26% showing poor fish condition. Excess nutrients, salinity, sedimentation, and impaired riparian vegetation are the main causes. Despite efforts under the Clean Water Act and Federal Land Policy, controlling agricultural pollution and livestock grazing is essential for restoring and maintaining water quality and natural conditions. Promising results have been seen from basin and watershed planning as well as riparian zone protections.
