Adapting transformation and transforming adaptation to climate change using a pathways approach

Matthew J. Colloff et al.

Summary: Adaptive transformation requires intentional transformative adaptation (ITA), achieved through a mix of incremental and transformative co-production processes to transform social-ecological systems. While ITA approaches help overcome adaptation challenges, there are still issues in practice, requiring different processes for resolution.

Adaptation pathways: A review of approaches and a learning framework

Saskia E. Werners et al.

Summary: Adaptation pathways have gained popularity in climate adaptation research and planning as a decision-focused approach. However, there is still a lack of systematic attempt to review and compare different approaches to adaptation pathways design and application. Analysis shows that different approaches correspond to different desired outcomes of pathways development, highlighting the need to focus on the utility of different methods in various decision contexts.

Watersheds may not recover from drought

Tim J. Peterson et al.

Summary: The Millennium Drought in southeastern Australia provided a natural experiment to challenge the assumption that watershed streamflow always recovers from drought. Seven years after the drought, 37% of watersheds had not recovered in terms of runoff, and the number of recovered watersheds was not increasing. The study found that post-drought precipitation not going to runoff likely went to increased evapotranspiration per unit of precipitation, suggesting a finite resilience of watersheds to disturbances.

Adapting Water Management to Climate Change in the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia

Ian P. Prosser et al.

Summary: The study focuses on water management policy in the Murray-Darling Basin in Australia, evaluating the operation of the policy through a synthesis of research data and literature. Limitations and inequities that could arise in the context of climate change are identified, and solutions proposed to be implemented during the formal review in the future.

A trickle, not a flood: environmental watering in the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia

Yiwen Chen et al.

Summary: Environmental flows are crucial for the conservation and management of rivers, flood plains, and wetlands in the Murray-Darling Basin. However, there are issues in the allocation of environmental water, especially for small wetlands that may not achieve ecological benefits. To meet the wetland conservation goals of the Plan, restrictions on flooding of private land need to be relaxed.

Using an ecosystem services approach to re-frame the management of flow constraints in a major regulated river basin

Georgia Kahan et al.

Summary: Worldwide, restoring connectivity between floodplains and river channels can generate significant ecological and socio-economic benefits. In Australia's Murray-Darling Basin Plan, purchasing water from irrigators to restore wetlands has proven to be effective. A strategy of relaxing constraints to maximize ecological benefits with limited water resources has been examined in five focal areas, highlighting the importance of regulating and cultural services in ecosystem management.
